Which somatic coaching certification should I choose?

By Konstantin Kaufmann · Reviewed by Katherine Kaufmann, certified NARM practitioner ·

The Strozzi Institute's Somatic Coach Certification has four 4-day in-person sessions at a standard tuition of $18,3251. The Embody Lab's Mind-Body Coaching Certificate is on demand, with lifetime access to recordings2. Neither certificate is a license to practice therapy, and The Embody Lab states: "This is an education program and not a licenser program"2.

How do Strozzi and Embody Lab compare?

The table shows both programs as their own pages listed them on 2026-10-09 and 2026-10-10.

What does Strozzi cost in total?

Tuition is the largest line. Strozzi also sets the application, wire, payment-plan and late-video fees. Lodging, travel and meals are yours to estimate. Copy this worksheet and fill in the right column for your own travel.

Tuition if you already completed Embodied Transformation$15,950 (the $18,325 rate includes $2,375 for that course)1
Paid in full, 5% off$17,408.75, or $15,152.50 for Embodied Transformation alumni1
Strozzi's own plan, 4 monthly payments at 0% APR$125 plan fee1, 3

Late final video$350 assessment fee, plus any extra mentor hours1

At the standard rate, an invited participant who pays in Strozzi's own plan of 4 monthly payments at 0% APR pays $18,325 in tuition, because the $150 counts toward tuition1. Strozzi's policies page adds a $125 fee for that plan, so the total is $18,4503. That is our arithmetic. If Strozzi does not invite you, you lose the $150.

The US cohort on the page meets at Strozzi Dojo in Petaluma, California1. Its first session runs October 8-11, 2026, so this cohort has already started, and its last session is May 27-30, 20271. The page listed no other US cohort when we checked, so ask Strozzi for the next start date1.

What must you finish to receive the certificate?

At Strozzi, the program components include 6 methodology calls, 4 coach competency calls, 4 one-to-one mentor coaching calls, 4 observed coaching video reviews and 3 small group mentor calls1. Strozzi lists one final video for the Somatics certification only, and one video if you go for the ICF PCC1. Ask Strozzi whether the PCC path needs both. The video credit expires 6 months after the last in-person day, and Strozzi grants no extensions or waivers1.

The Embody Lab's FAQ lists a Certificate of Completion when you have attended or watched all recordings, written a self-evaluation after each module, done 4 practice coaching sessions and paid in full2. Its page does not say who reviews the practice sessions. A second requirements list on the same page asks you to "Participate in supervision groups (where applicable)"2.

Does the certificate give you an ICF credential?

Neither program hands you an ICF credential. Strozzi states that graduates "are eligible to apply for an individual coaching accreditation through ICF", and it calls that a separate application process1. ICF itself says its Credential Path Survey "is the first step in any credential application"4.

Strozzi states that ICF recognized the program as an Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP) at PCC level, "depending upon how many coaching hours participants have completed at the time of application submission"1. We did not check this in ICF's own program search. ICF's own application page asks about "an ACTP or ACSTH program" next to "a Level 1 or Level 2 program"4. Strozzi states that ICF approved 119.5 Core Competencies hours and 21 Resource Development hours of Continuing Coach Education (CCE) for people who complete the program1.

The Embody Lab writes that "some students may be eligible" for ICF's Associate Certified Coach Portfolio Path, which ICF offers for non-ICF-accredited programs2. Coaches who already hold an ICF credential can apply the program's hours toward their CCE renewal2.

A third option is the Hakomi Institute's Hakomi-Informed Somatic Coaching, which the institute describes as "online, ICF-accredited" and suited to established and new coaches5. Embodywise hosts it5. We did not verify its price or hours.

Is a somatic coaching certificate a license?

No. A coaching certificate is private education, and The Embody Lab states that its program is "not a licenser program"2. Its first module covers "the differences between coaching and psychotherapy", scope of practice and "the art of making referrals"2.

Your state decides what you may do with clients, and a certificate does not change that. For what the law says without a license, read our state guides for California, Colorado, New York, Oregon and Washington. If you hold a license, your board sets your scope.

Who should choose a different training?

This section is our editorial view, based on the facts above.

Pick The Embody Lab or the online Hakomi program if you cannot take 16 days away from clients and travel to Petaluma four times1, 2, 5. Strozzi fits if you want mentors to review videos of your coaching and a route toward the ICF PCC1. Its lowest listed tuition is $15,152.50, for Embodied Transformation alumni who pay in full1. Strozzi also mentions scholarships, discounts and group rates, so ask before you rule it out1.

Strozzi is also a poor fit if you want to run workshops or groups. Its certificate covers 1:1 coaching and groups of up to 6, and it points group facilitators to its Train-the-Trainer program1.

If you hold a clinical license and want a psychotherapy training rather than a coaching one, our guide on which somatic certification to choose compares the training paths.
