What is somatic coaching?
By Konstantin Kaufmann ·
Somatic coaching is coaching that also works with what a person notices in the body, such as sensation, posture and movement. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process"1, and the Strozzi Institute describes its somatic method as "embodied learning that works through the body"2.
What does somatic coaching mean, and what happens in a session?
The full ICF definition of coaching ends with a process "that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential"1. ICF's Code of Ethics uses the same definition in its glossary3. Somatic coaching programs add the body to that process, and each school describes its own method in its own words.
| Program | How the program describes its work |
|---|---|
| Strozzi Institute | Strozzi Somatics is "a comprehensive method of embodied learning that works through the body"2. Clients work with "certified Strozzi Somatics coaches and teachers"2 |
| Somatic Coaching Academy | It calls its programs "sensation-based somatic coaching programs" and names three methods: Core Centering, Cross Mapping Method and Sensation-Based Motivation Coaching4 |
| The Embody Lab | It offers a Mind-Body Coaching Certificate on demand, with lifetime access to recordings5 |
No source we checked defines "somatic coaching" in general, and no single body owns the term. That is our reading of the sources above, and it means two coaches with the same job title can work in very different ways.
What a session looks like depends on the coach. In our description, a somatic coach talks with you about a goal, and at points asks what you notice in your body while you talk. Ask a coach before you book how a session runs, and which training their method comes from.
How is somatic coaching different from therapy, and what does state law say?
Coaching has its own ethics code. ICF standard 4.3 asks a coach to stay alert to a shift in the value of the coaching and, if appropriate, to explore "a different coach, professional, or resource" with the client3. That standard does not name therapy3.
State law draws its line around licensed activities and protected titles, such as counseling and psychotherapy. The provisions quoted below do not mention coaching. So none of them says that coaching without a license is allowed in that state. This table is information, not legal advice. Statute wording was checked October 9, 2026.
| State | What the law says (shortened) | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| California | Professional clinical counseling generally needs a board license, BPC §4999.30, subject to that chapter's exceptions6. A practitioner who uses the §2053.5 route, for services that are not unlawful under §§2051 and 2052, must give each client six written disclosures before services begin7. Their ads must state that they are not licensed by the state as a healing arts practitioner8 | California guide to §2053.5 |
| Colorado | An unlicensed person whose primary practice is psychotherapy, or who offers it for pay, must be registered and listed, C.R.S. §12-245-703(4)9. The state has stopped new unlicensed-psychotherapist registrations, and existing registrants can renew10 | Colorado guide to unlicensed practice |
| New York | Only a licensed or exempt person may practice mental health counseling or use the title "mental health counselor", Education Law §8402(2)11. Section 8410(5) does not limit "instruction, advice, support, encouragement, or information"12. That exemption does not authorize counseling under §8402(1) | New York guide to unlicensed practice |
| Oregon | Professional counseling and marriage and family therapy need a license, a listed status or a statutory exemption, ORS §675.825(1)(d)13. The exact title "licensed professional counselor" needs a license13 | Oregon guide to unlicensed practice |
| Washington | Counseling, as RCW §18.19.020(7) defines it, includes therapeutic techniques for a fee for mental, emotional or behavioral problems, and techniques for "the development of human potential". This version is effective until January 1, 202814. The chapter lists exemptions, such as unpaid counseling, and each has conditions14 | Washington guide to counseling law |
If you want treatment for a mental health condition, look for a licensed clinician and check the license with your state board. A coaching certificate does not replace that license. This is our editorial advice. In a crisis in the United States, call or text 988, or call 91115.
How can I check a somatic coach's training?
Ask four questions before you book. The examples show how much programs differ.
| Ask the coach | Why it matters | Example from a program's own page |
|---|---|---|
| Who issued your certificate? | Each school sets its own rules | Strozzi Institute, The Embody Lab and others each certify their own graduates |
| What did the certificate require? | Hours and assessment vary widely | Strozzi has four 4-day in-person sessions and more than 150 contact hours16, and requires in-person completion of Embodied Transformation16. The Embody Lab's Certificate of Completion requires all sessions attended or watched, a self-evaluation after each module, 4 practice coaching sessions and full payment5 |
| Do you also hold an ICF credential? | The credential is a separate step | Strozzi graduates "are eligible to apply for an individual coaching accreditation through ICF"16 |
| Do you hold a state license? | A certificate is private education | The Embody Lab states: "This is an education program and not a licenser program"5 |
California adds one more check. A practitioner on the §2053.5 route must give you a written statement of their education, training, experience and other qualifications before services start7. If a California practitioner works on that route and you did not get this statement, ask for it.
Be careful with a coach or program that promises a fixed result, such as a success rate for every client. Ask what evidence stands behind the promise. This is our editorial advice.
A training-verified OneSomatic profile shows that OneSomatic reviewed the training, and it does not by itself confirm a state license17. If you consider training yourself, read how to choose a somatic coaching certification or how somatic training paths compare.
How can a somatic coach show verified training on OneSomatic?
A OneSomatic profile is free, and no card is required18. You add your profile, then submit proof of completed somatic training. OneSomatic reviews proof of completed somatic training before it shows your profile as verified18.
The Free plan costs $0 and includes a verified profile and intro-call requests from people15. Verification covers your training, and it does not by itself confirm a state license17. OneSomatic is not a therapy provider. You offer and deliver your own services15.
One limit applies today: practitioners in Washington and Nevada cannot sign up at this time15.
