What does SimplePractice cost for a solo cash-pay practice?

By Konstantin Kaufmann ·

SimplePractice costs $49 a month on Starter, $79 on Essential and $99 on Plus for one practitioner at standard prices, checked on October 22, 20261. A cash-pay practice also pays 3.15% plus $0.30 on every card payment and a $20 AMA fee once a year, so 20 sessions a month at $160 cost $1,889.60 a year on Starter1–3.

OneSomatic publishes this guide. We took every price from SimplePractice's own pricing page and help center and did not test the software.

What are SimplePractice's monthly prices?

PlanStandard priceFirst 3 months with the offer (shown Oct 22, 2026)What it adds for a solo practice
Starter$49/month1$24.50/month1telehealth, online appointment requests, Professional Website4, 5
Essential$79/month1$39.50/month1appointment reminders for every appointment, Secure Messaging, custom note templates4
Plus$99/month1$49.50/month1group appointments, booking widget for your own website, extra clinicians2, 4

On October 22, 2026, SimplePractice showed this offer with no end date. It applies only if you begin a paid account within the first 7 days of the free trial1. The trial runs 30 days and needs no credit card6. After 3 months, every plan moves to its standard price1. Plus is also the only plan for a group practice, and each extra clinician there costs $74 a month in a practice of 2 to 52.

What does a year cost a solo cash-pay practice?

At $160 a session and 20 card payments a month, card fees cost more than any of the three plans. A $160 session paid through SimplePractice's integrated payments costs $5.34 in card fees: 3.15% of $160 is $5.04, plus $0.302. SimplePractice's year-end report lists these as "Stripe processing expenses"7. On top comes the $20 AMA fee for CPT code access, charged per clinician once a year, even if you never bill insurance3.

The table is our calculation from SimplePractice's prices: 12 months of the standard plan, the AMA fee, and card fees for every session at $1601–3.

Plan20 sessions a month60 sessions a month
Starter$1,889.60$4,452.80
Essential$2,249.60$4,812.80
Plus$2,489.60$5,052.80

Card fees alone come to $1,281.60 a year at 20 sessions a month and $3,844.80 at 60. At 60 sessions they cost more than six years of Starter. The 50% offer takes $73.50 off year one on Starter, $118.50 on Essential and $148.50 on Plus1. The AMA fee gets no discount3.

To use your own numbers: multiply your session price by 0.0315, add $0.30, and multiply by the sessions you charge in a year. Then add 12 months of the plan and $20.

Some practices pass the card fee on to clients as a line on the invoice. SimplePractice lets you add one, and its help center warns that surcharging is illegal in some states and restricted in others8. Check your state's rule before you do it.

What does each plan leave out for one-to-one cash-pay work?

Starter sends appointment reminders only for telehealth appointments4. If you see clients in person, Starter sends them no reminder. Essential and Plus send text, email or voice reminders for every appointment4.

Starter has no Secure Messaging4. On Starter you can customize intake forms, but not progress note templates. Essential and Plus allow both4.

All three plans include telehealth and online appointment requests4. The widget that puts the request form on your own website is on Plus only4. Groups, workshops or classes need Plus, or Essential with a $20 monthly add-on, which brings Essential to $99 as well1, 4.

For a solo practitioner who works in person, Essential at $79 is the lowest plan that reminds every client. Starter at $49 fits an online-only practice.

The website sits on a SimplePractice address such as yourpracticename-clientsecure.me unless you connect your own domain5. On October 22, 2026, SimplePractice showed a World Mental Health Day offer for Care Aide: free for 45 days, then 50% off ($29.50 a month) for 3 months, then $591. The page gave no end date.

What changed with SimplePractice's new pricing in October 2026?

From October 1, 2026, insurance claims cost from $0.39 each, or from $1.79 with Insurance Navigator, and Essential and Plus lost their free monthly claims9. Plan prices did not change9. SimplePractice states that a practice that files no claims electronically through it pays nothing more9.

A cash-pay practice still pays the AMA fee, with or without insurance billing. SimplePractice told customers on September 22, 2026 that the yearly $20 fee appears on the November invoice3.

If you write superbills so clients can claim out-of-network reimbursement themselves, you file no claim. Our free superbill template makes one as a PDF without practice software.

What should you know before you sign up or cancel?

SimplePractice gives no refunds. A cancellation takes effect at once, and unused time is not prorated2. Plan changes work any time: an upgrade charges the prorated difference, and a downgrade leaves a prorated credit2.

  1. Start the 30-day trial without a card and check the features of the plan you want, using the table above6.
  2. Decide within 7 days if you want the 50% offer1.
  3. Count your card payments for one month and put them into the formula above.
  4. Cancel at the end of a billing period, since unused days are not refunded2.

When does another tool cost less?

Stay with SimplePractice if you bill insurance, run a group practice or prescribe: it files claims, adds team members on Plus and offers ePrescribe2, 9. For one-to-one cash-pay work, compare the yearly total above with the tools in our SimplePractice alternatives guide, and with Practice Better in SimplePractice vs Practice Better.

OneSomatic's own paid plans are planned and not on sale10. OneSomatic Essential is planned at $29 a month with online booking, a booking widget, session video, invoicing, superbills, good faith estimates, an intake form and session notes10. Its planned card payments carry no OneSomatic fee; the card processor's fee applies10.
